Keretapi Sarong walks Bandar Hilir on Malaysia Day, 16 September, from 7am

Keretapi Sarong hits Bandar Hilir on Malaysia Day, 16 September 2026. Melaka Tourism Promotion Division expects more than 2,000 people. Gather from 7am at the Melaka Sultanate Palace Museum. The walk is supposed to leave between 8am and 8.30am, about two kilometres, and finish at Menara Taming Sari. Free to join. Wear a sarong. Full baju is optional.

Nasrul Ahmad, general manager of the Melaka Tourism Promotion Division, said the line will include Malay, Baba Nyonya, Chitty and Portuguese dress, with performances in front of Muzium Rakyat, around Stadthuys, and at other points. There is still no official turn-by-turn map. The confirmed pins are start at the palace museum, activity around the Red Square museums, finish at the gyro tower. If you know Bandar Hilir, you already know that walk.

This is Melaka's station, not the Klang Valley train

LOCCO's national Keretapi Sarong is 10 years old this edition. Utusan and Bernama both put Melaka on the 16 September list of cities, alongside George Town, Ipoh, Johor Bahru, Kuantan, Sungai Petani, Kota Bharu and new names Padang Besar, Langkawi and Kuching. Klang Valley still does the secret-destination train hop from a dozen stations. Melaka does not. Here it is a street procession because the heritage core is walkable and the "train" metaphor is the outfit, not KTMB.

Theme nationally is Ethnicity. Locally the instruction is simpler. Kain pelikat, batik sarong, or anything that reads as a wrap. You can watch in jeans from the Stadthuys steps. You will look underdressed next to 2,000 people who followed the brief. Bring water. 7am in mid-September is already humid. The two kilometres will take longer than a Google walking estimate because of performances and people stopping for photos in front of Christ Church.

If you are staying in the UNESCO core

This is worth getting up for if your hotel is in Bandar Hilir or Jonker. It is not worth a 6am drive from Ayer Keroh unless you already wanted Malaysia Day in the old town. Traffic on Jalan Kota and the river bridges will crawl from 7.30am. Park at Mahkota Parade or Dataran Pahlawan and walk. After Taming Sari, the tower is a separate paid ride. The parade does not include a ticket.

Malaysia Day itself is a Wednesday. The parade is the public, photogenic bit. Government events will sit elsewhere. If you only have one morning in the heritage zone that week, this is the one with colour. If you hate crowds on Jalan Kota, go to Jonker after 10am when the procession has already emptied toward the tower.

There is no registration page in the Bernama briefing. Turn up at the palace museum lawn from 7am. If the crowd is bigger than 2,000, you will feel it at the Stadthuys pinch point. Stand on the museum side of the square, not in the road.
