About Porta de Santiago (Kota A Famosa)

Porta de Santiago is the stone gate people mean when they say A Famosa in town. The Portuguese built the fort after 1511. The Dutch recut the arch in 1670. The British demolished most of the walls; this gate survived. The exterior is free and always open. TourismMelaka lists a small museum at RM2, 09:00-17:00, closed Monday. Climb Bukit St. Paul from behind the gate. Photograph at sunrise or late afternoon. Midday heat on the stone is harsh. Do not confuse this with A'Famosa Water Theme Park, Safari, or Freeport Outlet in Alor Gajah. Those are a different trip.
