Banda Hilir hosts Festival Pertukaran Budaya: Meraikan Warisan Silang Budaya from 31 October 2026. The Department of National Heritage listed it on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage calendar as the Cultural Exchange Festival. Melaka Tourism Promotion Division told Bernama the opening parade moves through Banda Hilir on 31 October.
The UNESCO page is the one to plan around. It sets public hours for the exhibition and the palace-ground bazaar at 9am to 10pm on 31 October and 1 November. Bernama, quoting Nasrul Ahmad on 16 September, still described a three-day run through 2 November. Until Jabatan Warisan Negara posts a day-by-day timetable, treat 31 October and 1 November as the confirmed public days.
The three parts of the programme
The organiser text on the UNESCO listing splits the festival into three blocks.
The ICH Festival is the public stretch. It includes a heritage parade, heritage competitions, kebaya demonstrations and fashion showcases, cultural performances, and stalls selling cultural products.
The International Workshop shares the same theme, Fostering Exchange, Promoting Mutual Understanding, and Celebrating ICH. It is aimed at countries that already share multinational UNESCO listings with Malaysia. Those listings are the Wangkang Ceremony with China, Pantun with Indonesia and Brunei, and kebaya with Brunei, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand. The workshop is meant to work toward a joint safeguarding plan. Do not assume you can walk into the workshop.
The Cultural Exchange Exhibition is the indoor piece. Six countries take part: Brunei Darussalam, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand.
Where to wait on 31 October
Nasrul Ahmad said the highlight is the opening ceremony and the Cross-Cultural Heritage Parade on 31 October, with performers from Malaysian ethnic groups and from the participating countries along Banda Hilir.
TourismMelaka's 17 September journal piece adds Mak Yong, plus lion and dragon dance from China. Mak Yong is Malay dance-drama already recognised as intangible heritage. The TourismMelaka Compass for October called the parade free.
There is still no published street map. Last month's Keretapi Sarong used the palace museum as a gathering point and finished at Menara Taming Sari, with stops in front of Muzium Rakyat and around Stadthuys. This parade is a different event, but it uses the same tight grid. Dutch Square and Jalan Kota are the obvious places to wait. Do not block the road.
Palace grounds until 10pm
The UNESCO listing puts demonstrations, a heritage food and craft bazaar, and cultural performances on the Melaka Sultanate Palace Museum grounds on 31 October and 1 November, 9am to 10pm. That is later than the museum's usual last entry. The timber palace on Jalan Kota is a reconstruction of Sultan Mansur Shah's 15th-century court, built without nails, with about 1,300 artefacts across eight chambers. The festival activity is listed on the grounds, not as a ticketed night tour of those rooms. Pay the museum door price if you want the interior as well.
The exhibition sits at the Malay and Islamic World Museum, the building locals still call DMDI, for the same two days and the same 9am to 10pm window. Bernama said Muzium Rakyat is the convention venue. Those three buildings sit within a short walk of each other at the foot of St Paul's Hill.
October is when the Northeast Monsoon usually returns. TourismMelaka's October Compass notes rain most days, often building through the afternoon into a short heavy evening fall. The palace grounds are outdoor. Bring a light rain jacket and use the five-foot ways around Jonker Walk if the sky opens. Jonker Street Night Market still runs Friday to Sunday between showers.
What this is not
This is not a ticketed arena show. No organiser has posted a public ticket price for the parade or the palace-ground stalls. Treat those as free unless a booth asks otherwise. The international workshop is not a visitor attraction. Participation numbers were still being finalised when Nasrul spoke on 16 September, after a coordination meeting set for 29 September. If you are travelling only for a specific country pavilion, wait for Jabatan Warisan Negara's Facebook page, which UNESCO lists as the organiser contact, before you lock a hotel.
Parking is easier at Dataran Pahlawan Melaka Megamall or Mahkota Parade on Jalan Merdeka than on Jalan Kota itself. From there it is a short walk to Dutch Square. Grab works. The Melaka River Cruise HOHO stop at Stadthuys is the closest water option if you are already on the river.
TourismMelaka's October Compass told visitors that if they could only base themselves in Melaka for one October weekend, they should make it this one. Deepavali falls on 8 November, with a state day off on 9 November, so the weekend after the festival is a different crowd.
