MBMB counted 1,523,819 people on Banda Hilir's car-free streets from January to September 2026. That is not a festival weekend. It is Friday to Sunday, every week, on the same red roads the coaches already print.
Mayor Datuk Shadan Othman told Melaka Hari Ini the zone feeds about 300 local traders. The busiest months were January at 183,006 visitors, March at 182,117, and May at 174,013. Crowds thicken after the heat breaks. People stay for the lights, not a lunchtime museum queue.
What actually closes to cars
The regular pattern is Friday from 18:00 through Sunday midnight. MBMB has used Jalan Istana, Jalan Gereja, Jalan Laksamana, and stretches of Jalan Merdeka. Park at Mahkota Parade or Dataran Pahlawan and walk. Grab drivers still drop you on the fringe, then you join the foot traffic.
Jonker Walk's night market sits inside that same weekend clock, 18:00 to midnight Friday to Sunday. The car-free zone is wider than the night-market stalls. You can walk Dutch Square and the river mouth without dodging a tourist van, then hit Jalan Hang Jebat when the tarps go up.
Traders have already asked MBMB to stretch the hours on school holidays and public holidays. That request is more useful than any slogan. It means the extra evening is paying rent.
Do not wait for a special edition
MBMB has posted one-off extensions before, for Hari Raya, New Year, and the Wesak weekend. Those notices name exact start and end hours. As of 16 October there is no matching notice for Deepavali on 8 November or for polling day on 14 November. Treat the ordinary Friday-to-Sunday window as the plan unless MBMB publishes a new one.
Deepavali is a public holiday in Melaka on Sunday 8 November, with Monday 9 November in lieu. That is a long weekend on the calendar. It is not, by itself, a Little India bazaar with posted hours. Skip any listing that only recycles 2025 photographs.
The zone already has civic trophies, including a 2024 Malaysia Book of Records nod for duration and a state green award. The number that matters for a weekend visit is simpler. More than 1.5 million people used those streets in nine months, and the evening is when it is worth being there.
Porta de Santiago and Bukit St. Paul stay outdoor and free. PERZIM museums around the red buildings still close Monday, with last entry at 16:30 on the days they open. If you want Stadthuys rooms as well as the street, do not time the indoor hour for a Monday, and do not assume the car-free night keeps the museums open. It does not.
